Which people counting technologies are good for you?

If you are not used to retail people counting and another with the first questions you’ll be asking yourself is which technology should I use?


You will find three main forms of technologies; beams, thermal and video. Each have their unique benefits and weaknesses depending on the environment they’re being installed in.

Beam Counters – In many cases are battery powered and so suited for temporary use. These are easy to install and take, but also vulnerable to get damaged and field of view blocked. These are unable to count people walking via an entrance side-by-side and so will undercount.

Thermal Cameras – Infra-red devices much like the IRISYS cameras include the most widely used footfall counting solutions on earth. These units are IP enabled and over one unit could be linked together for wide entrances. Accuracy levels have become good.

Camcorders – Be single or dual vision IP enabled devices. The only view cameras are likely to be less accurate. Overall the playback quality items are more expense than thermal cameras. The dual-view cameras are as accurate as the thermal devices in many instances.
