Every hairstylist remember the moment they became attracted to hair and also the desire for creativity who’s inspires. The storyplot wasn’t any different for U.S. Marine Corps veteran Kristyl Rodrigues who discovered her love for hair while enrolled at Bellus Academy’s school of cosmetology in Poway, California. There Kristyl was studying cosmetology and pursuing an expert beauty education. In their story, there is a valuable message which can be shared. “It doesn’t matter in which you begin or how we begin. I wish to have the ability to spark that passion into people where we’re thus, making this industry much better, we’re gaining knowledge from our past and we’re carrying on that legacy,” shared Kristyl. Recommendations her story.
First: Inspiration Can Strike Anywhere
Kristyl joined the Marine Corps in 2014 and was enlisted at the age of 19. Her first duty station is at Okinawa, Japan, then an industry operation in Korea. Every Sunday during Kristyl’s period in Korea, a barber would visit the site and give haircuts on the Marines. However, this happened: “I was at a tent doing my very own hair,” shares Kristyl. “I would likely do shape ups and line ups for me, nothing too crazy, after i had a Marine Sergeant approach me and get me for a haircut. I had created never cut anybody’s hair before however i jumped straight into it and that he wound up loving it…and along with his outreach and leadership, literally the next day, I had 13 Marines lined up for me.”
This can be the first moment that Kristyl considered barbering being a future career-she chose charging $5 a haircut understanding that maybe it was. With a strong intrinsic motivation and entrepreneurial spirit, she worked overnight shifts on guard duty from 12a.m. to 8a.m., then cut hair through the days. What Kristyl learned was profound: Hairdressers touch more hearts than heads and every time you service a customer, there’s impact.
The Impact of A Haircut
“As a Marine, the standards for appearance have reached an all-time high. The uniform must be squared away and ironed. Everything should be flush, measured properly-there’s a great deal of attention to detail,” shares Kristyl. “I was investigating Marines from top to bottom. It tore up my heart because we’re the best people of this nation and now we should be walking around as such. That’s in which the impact i believe and heart originated from, and that i thought about being capable to transmit that through my hands to folks around me…and have them walk around feeling proud and good from top to bottom, and representing this nation as such.”
Similarities Operating: Military & Barbering
After getting back from service, Kristyl asked herself what are the next challenge and chapter in their own life will be. That’s when she chose to pursue her education being a barber at Bellus Academy. Gaining knowledge through her very own past and looking forward, she found many similarities in their own service and in the role of a barber.
